A long-standing restaurant frequented by sports stars and celebrities is set to close its doors after operating for over 40 years. Puccini, established in Swinton, Greater Manchester in 1982 and managed by Michele Pucci since 1990, is facing closure due to a decline in business since the pandemic, challenges in hiring skilled staff, and escalating operational costs leading to financial strain.
Michele Pucci, the 65-year-old owner, expressed that despite efforts to sustain the business, the lack of support from local authorities and landlords has made it untenable to continue operating. Following a temporary closure for a three-week holiday, the restaurant will not reopen, with Pucci extending gratitude to loyal customers for their enduring support.
Known locally as Puccinis, the Italian eatery has been a popular destination for sports teams and notable personalities such as the England football squad and former Manchester United players Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs. Over the years, the restaurant has also hosted Hollywood icon Sylvester Stallone and prominent figures like David Cameron, Alex Ferguson, and boxing champions Joe Fraser and Roberto Duran.
Pucci highlighted the challenges post-Brexit in recruiting staff, citing a shift in preferences among English workers towards more favorable job conditions. He emphasized the strain of high operational costs, including National Insurance, VAT, rent, and wages, which have contributed to the difficult decision to close the establishment. Despite the closure, Pucci’s charitable endeavors and contributions to the community have been significant, with plans to support his wife’s new venture—a coffee shop and wine bar.
Regarding the future of Swinton, Salford council confirmed ongoing efforts for regeneration in the area, emphasizing the importance of revitalizing town centers like Swinton. While there are no immediate plans for The Lancastrian Hall, a comprehensive strategy is being developed in collaboration with the community to guide future decisions and investments in the region.
