Kemi Badenoch expressed gratitude towards Nigel Farage for handling what she referred to as her “spring cleaning” following the defection of former Conservative member Robert Jenrick to Reform UK.
Badenoch’s remarks came after she learned of Jenrick’s planned switch and subsequently removed him from the Shadow Cabinet on Thursday amid a day filled with political upheaval. Shortly thereafter, Nigel Farage welcomed Jenrick as the 24th former Tory MP to join his party, despite having previously criticized Jenrick as insincere and lacking convictions.
In various interviews today, Badenoch accused the former Shadow Justice Secretary of being untruthful, stating that his words could not be trusted. When asked multiple times if Jenrick was considered a “traitor,” Badenoch responded on Sky News by saying, “Robert Jenrick is now Nigel Farage’s concern, not mine.”
She further expressed satisfaction, stating, “I’m pleased because Nigel Farage is taking care of my cleanup task. The issues are departing from the Conservative Party and moving to Reform.” When questioned about downplaying the impact of the defection, Badenoch emphasized that the public was uninterested in the internal turmoil within the Tory party.
Badenoch later emphasized the importance of maintaining party integrity, stating, “If there are individuals who do not align with our party values, who treat politics as a game and people’s lives as trivial, engaging in unnecessary drama, then they should depart. Such individuals are not welcome in the Conservative Party.”
Labour minister Pat McFadden highlighted the ongoing chaos and drama within the right-wing political landscape, suggesting that recent events did not indicate a unification of the right but rather a continuation of discord that characterized the Conservative era.
McFadden emphasized Labour’s commitment to enhancing public services, stressing that progress cannot be achieved amidst internal party conflicts.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves cautioned against taking Nigel Farage’s claims of an upcoming Labour defection to Reform UK lightly, advising skepticism towards his statements. Reeves suggested that Farage’s assertions should be viewed with caution, reiterating the need for a critical approach towards such claims.
