A tragic incident unfolded as a young girl lost her life in a house fire due to a stairway collapse, according to an inquest report. Despite efforts from neighbors to rescue 13-year-old Lily Anne Childs from her burning home, the intensity of the flames thwarted their attempts. Firefighters faced challenges reaching the upper floor after the staircase gave way during the emergency response on December 28.
The fire, which occurred at Bovis Homes’ Nightingale View estate in Ashford, Kent, resulted in one child and an adult, presumably Lily’s mother, being hospitalized. Additionally, three firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze that engulfed the semi-detached property on White Admiral Way. Unfortunately, despite the rescue efforts, Lily could not be saved.
During the inquest proceedings, Coroner Sarah Clarke revealed that multiple witnesses reported the fire and a child trapped inside the residence. Despite neighbors’ courageous rescue attempts, the fierce flames impeded their efforts. The collapse of the staircase hindered the firefighters’ access to the upper floor where Lily was trapped. The coroner attributed Lily’s cause of death to smoke inhalation pending further investigation, with the inquest scheduled to resume on March 30.
