Excavation plans are underway for what is believed to be the oldest railway station platform in the world. Last year, the historic Heighington Station, dating back to 1827 and part of the first passenger railway to utilize steam trains globally, was acquired by the charity Friends of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

Niall Hammond, the group’s chair, mentioned that there are intentions to excavate a small platform near the station site, presumed to be the original platform due to its size and shape. Although plans are at an early stage, the group aims to engage numerous volunteers for the summer dig. Mr. Hammond described the adjacent platform as “tiny” with cobblestones.

The charity, which purchased the building for £285,000 following a fundraising campaign, envisions making the site accessible to the public. The goal is to restore the station to its 1827 ambiance, complete with staff in period attire, candlelight, and decor authentic to the era. Restoration costs are estimated at £3 million, with much of the year dedicated to securing grant funding.

The long-term vision for the site includes transforming it into an 1825-themed pub or restaurant with accommodation to revitalize it economically and for community use. Historic England has classified Heighington station as a Grade II* building, signifying its significance as one of the top 8% most important buildings in the country.

Originally opened in 1825, the Stockton and Darlington railway commissioned Heighington station in 1826 as one of three buildings to handle goods and passengers, ushering in its operational debut in early 1827. Despite its historical value, the station fell into disrepair in the 1970s, underwent restoration in 1984, and operated as the Locomotion No 1 inn until its closure in 2017.
