“Norovirus Hospitalizations Surge 45% in NHS Data”

Published on

Norovirus cases are increasing sharply, leading to a rise in hospitalizations due to the vomiting bug. Recent data from the NHS revealed a 45% surge in patients occupying hospital beds with norovirus, reaching an average of 823 admissions daily. This spike follows a 57% increase in England the week before, indicating a potential surge in norovirus infections as flu rates decline.

Elderly patients, in particular, are being hospitalized for severe dehydration caused by symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting. The current hospitalization rates for norovirus symptoms are at a record high for the winter season, surpassing last year’s figures when an average of 784 beds were occupied daily by the virus.

Professor Meghana Pandit, NHS England Medical Director, expressed concerns about the strain on hospitals due to the rising cases of the vomiting virus. She emphasized the importance of seeking medical care when needed, advising people to practice frequent handwashing to prevent norovirus spread. Individuals are urged to stay home until 48 hours symptom-free and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen.

While the number of flu-related hospitalizations in England has decreased for the second consecutive week, Health Secretary Wes Streeting cautioned the public about an impending cold snap. He encouraged vigilance and adherence to public health guidelines to ensure safety for individuals and their families.

Sarah Sleet, chief executive at Asthma + Lung UK, highlighted the ongoing circulation of winter viruses and the potential pressure on the NHS. She urged individuals, especially those with lung conditions, to get their flu jabs promptly and seek emergency help if experiencing breathing difficulties.

In case of prolonged diarrhea or vomiting, the NHS advises contacting 111 for guidance. It is crucial to remain cautious despite the declining flu hospitalizations and to be prepared for the challenges posed by winter viruses.
