Chris Packham, the host of Winterwatch, has disclosed the reason behind his decision not to live with his partner of 17 years, Charlotte Corney. Despite their long-term relationship, Chris, 64, relocated to the New Forest in Hampshire four years ago, while Charlotte remains on the Isle of Wight where she is the founder of the Wildheart Trust.

Expressing his fondness for the New Forest since childhood due to its abundant wildlife, Chris explained, “I’d be badgering my dad to drive me out at weekends to see the birds and bugs and bees and butterflies and things.” Although Charlotte spends more time at his place now, she maintains her own residence in East Cowes, Isle of Wight, which she adores for its distinctiveness.

On a podcast, Chris mentioned his comfort in being alone despite enjoying time with Charlotte. He emphasized the value of personal space in their relationship. Chris attributed his preference for solitary living to his autism, stating, “I create a space where essentially I feel comfortable because I’ve made it, I’m in control of it.” He acknowledged that he thrives best in solitude without external judgment.

Moreover, Chris shared that he recently traveled to Spain without Charlotte, citing their differing travel preferences. The couple initially met in 2007 at the Isle of Wight Zoo during Chris’s filming visit. Charlotte revealed in an interview that Chris had kept his autism diagnosis private for several years, which initially puzzled her due to his devotion and lack of empathy. It was only after she suggested Asperger’s Syndrome as a possibility that Chris gradually acknowledged his condition.
