The UK is preparing for Storm Chandra as the Met Office issues snow warnings for 27 areas. These alerts cover parts of Scotland, northern England, and the Midlands, with heavy rain expected to turn into snow over high ground, potentially causing travel and power disruptions on Tuesday. Storm Chandra, part of the storm naming group shared by the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands, is set to hit the country tomorrow.

Nine weather alerts are currently in place for tomorrow, urging residents in affected areas to assess flood risks and prepare flood plans and emergency kits. The first warning, effective from midnight until 5 pm tomorrow, includes northern England, southern Scotland, and parts of the Midlands, with expected rainfall between 20mm to 30mm, and up to 50mm in some areas.

The second alert, covering central and eastern Scotland from 6 am tomorrow till the end of the day, anticipates rainfall totals of 20mm to 35mm, with some areas possibly receiving up to 50mm. Snow is expected on higher ground, with spots above 500m likely to see up to 20cm of snow accumulation.

Met Office Chief Forecaster, Paul Gundersen, warned about the range of hazards Storm Chandra will bring, including strong winds affecting certain regions and heavy rain falling on saturated ground. As the storm interacts with colder air, snow accumulation is expected on higher ground in various areas.

The Met Office’s forecast for Tuesday describes a cloudy start with heavy persistent rain, gradually moving eastward to clear skies and blustery showers in the southwest.
