Suella Braverman has switched allegiance to Reform, carrying a history of controversies with her.
The ex-Home Secretary has been known for her firm, offensive, and sometimes bizarre remarks, having been dismissed twice from the Home Office, once for breaching the ministerial code.
Joining Nigel Farage’s party alongside former colleague Robert Jenrick, Braverman criticized the state of Britain as “broken,” neglecting her involvement in the previous Tory administrations she now criticizes.
Some of her notable moments include her aspiration to see asylum seekers deported under a failed scheme, which was widely condemned for trivializing the asylum seekers’ situation. Braverman was relieved of her Home Secretary role after breaching the ministerial code by using personal email for official communication.
Despite acknowledging her error as a “technical infringement,” she was reinstated by Rishi Sunak, only to be later dismissed in 2023 for an article criticizing police actions without prior approval.
Braverman faced backlash for labeling homelessness as a “lifestyle choice” and proposing penalties for charities aiding homeless individuals. Termed “Speedy Sue” for seeking favorable treatment over a speeding incident, she denied any wrongdoing despite contradictory evidence.
Her contentious statements on asylum seekers and grooming gangs sparked accusations of provocation and far-right rhetoric. Braverman also faced scrutiny for challenging UN protections for refugees and downplaying the plight of LGBT asylum seekers.
In a controversial move, she claimed ignorance regarding the deaths of 12 refugees in Rwanda, despite documented references and prior parliamentary discussions on the issue.
