“Reform UK Candidate Shares Campaign Blunder in By-Election Mix-Up”

Lee Anderson faced criticism after enthusiastically sharing images of his campaign activities for an upcoming by-election in an incorrect location. The Reform chief whip posted photos of himself and supporters outside Stanley House Function Rooms, believing it to be in Gorton and Denton but, in fact, situated in Angela Rayner’s Ashton-under-Lyne constituency.

In a social media post, Mr. Anderson expressed readiness for the competitive seat, stating, “Reform UK is unafraid of any opposition. Let the challenge begin.” Angela Rayner, upon discovering the error, took a jab at Reform UK, highlighting their inability to locate the correct constituency and suggesting they focus on addressing local issues like the cost of living.

The photos, shared by Mr. Anderson over the weekend, revealed that Stanley House Function Rooms are approximately half a kilometer outside the contested constituency as per Boundary Commission maps. Following the recent defection of Suella Braverman to Nigel Farage’s Reform party, Ms. Rayner criticized the influx of former Tories into the Reform ranks alongside Anderson and other turncoats.

The upcoming by-election, scheduled for February 26, was triggered by the resignation of Labour MP Andrew Gwynne due to health concerns after being suspended from the Labour Party. Speculation arose regarding Andy Burnham’s potential return to Parliament, but the Labour’s National Executive Committee rejected his candidacy bid for the by-election.

Keir Starmer called for unity among Labour MPs ahead of the Gorton and Denton by-election, emphasizing the need to stand together against Reform UK. He cautioned against diverting resources for unnecessary elections, stressing the importance of focusing on essential contests.

As tensions within the party persisted, Andy Burnham opted to remain focused on his duties, declining further comments on the ongoing controversy. Meanwhile, Starmer praised Burnham’s role as the Mayor of Manchester but emphasized the need to prioritize crucial elections over less essential ones for effective resource allocation.
