“Severe Flooding Shuts Down M5 Motorway, Causes Commuter Chaos”

Published on

Commuters are experiencing significant delays due to the closure of a section of the M5 motorway caused by severe flooding. The southbound lanes between junction 28 for Cullompton and junction 29 for Exeter in Devon have been shut down by the Highways Agency. The closure was initially due to a crash on Tuesday night, which led to flooding as rain fell during the recovery process.

Specialist contractors are currently investigating the cause of the flooding and working to reopen the affected stretch of the motorway. In the meantime, a lengthy diversion route is in place, directing drivers off at the Cullompton junction onto rural roads parallel to the motorway. The heavy traffic has extended back to around junction 27 for Tiverton in Devon, impacting commuters traveling to destinations like Exeter and Plymouth in the southwest of England.

The National Highways team is actively working to resolve the issue and ensure the safe reopening of the road. The closure and diversion route information are being communicated to drivers via official channels. The closure is expected to continue until the necessary repairs are completed.

In a related development, neighboring Somerset has also been affected by adverse weather conditions, prompting authorities to declare a major incident following Storm Chandra’s impact. Somerset residents have been cautioned about potential flooding risks due to saturated ground from recent heavy rainfall. Authorities are advising against unnecessary travel and urging caution in the face of challenging weather forecasts.

The disruption on the M5 has led to traffic diversions and delays, with alternative routes experiencing increased congestion. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as the investigation and repair work progresses. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and stay informed about the latest developments to minimize disruptions.
