“Facial Recognition Cameras Help Police Apprehend Sex Offenders”

Published on

Facial recognition technology has led to the arrest of numerous sex offenders within a short span, according to the police. Greater Manchester Police reported utilizing Live Facial Recognition (LFR) cameras on 23 occasions since October. Notably, one out of every five apprehensions involved individuals registered as sex offenders.

These cameras, mounted on specialized police vehicles, scan faces for distinct biometric data (known as ‘faceprints’) and swiftly compare them against a watchlist of wanted criminals. They promptly alert officers upon finding a match. The deployment of these cameras has extended to various locations including the city center, the airport, and even outside Old Trafford during the recent Manchester United vs. Manchester City derby – marking the first instance of their use at a football match by the force.

The Home Office has distributed LFR cameras to police forces as part of nation-wide trials. A recent pilot by the Metropolitan Police in Croydon, involving a camera on a lamppost, resulted in an arrest approximately every 34 minutes on average. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced plans for expanding the availability of these camera vans to all forces in England and Wales. The total number of camera vans is set to increase from 10 to 50 as part of a significant overhaul in policing.

In defense of the initiative, Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of leveraging new technology to combat crime effectively while safeguarding individual liberties. She stressed the need for technology to align with values and prevent the wrongful implication of innocent individuals in criminal cases.

Since October 2025, Greater Manchester Police has made 40 arrests using LFR, with one-fifth related to registered sex offenders. Out of the total arrests, 30 individuals have been charged with various offenses. Notably, one recent operation led to the apprehension of a 43-year-old man in Piccadilly Gardens for breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order, resulting in multiple charges.

Additional arrests in Piccadilly Gardens involved offenses such as stalking, possession of indecent images, and domestic offenses. At Manchester Airport, a man was arrested on suspicion of drug possession with intent to supply.

The success stories highlighted by GMP include apprehending individuals wanted for firearms offenses and ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals. Sergeant Ryan Magee from the Sexual Offenders Management Unit expressed satisfaction with the enhanced public protection and proactive policing facilitated by Live Facial Recognition technology. Collaboration among various police units has enabled a coordinated approach to identifying and disrupting high-risk offenders, demonstrating the technology’s value in safeguarding communities and preventing potential harm. Targeted operations have notably improved the force’s capability to intercept dangerous individuals and protect the public.
