“UK Homes Set to Abandon Traditional TV for Internet-Based Services”

Published on

Many households in the UK have already embraced internet-based TV for live and on-demand content consumption. A recent report sponsored by Sky indicates that by the mid-2030s, nearly all homes could transition to internet-delivered television services, potentially leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial TV platforms like Freeview.

The shift towards web-based TV viewing has been facilitated by the availability of various alternatives that do not require aerial connections. For instance, Sky’s latest streaming offerings and the Freely service, developed by the same group behind Freeview, now allow viewers to access a wide range of live and on-demand programming through broadband connections, eliminating the need for antennas.

The increasing prevalence of internet-connected devices in households is contributing to a decline in traditional broadcast TV viewership, with more individuals opting for streaming services.

Another challenge facing Freeview is the potential reallocation of its radio frequencies to mobile network operators post-2031, posing a threat to the current over-the-air transmission system.

As the costs associated with maintaining the aging terrestrial TV infrastructure continue to rise, the UK government is actively engaging in discussions regarding the future course of action.

Nick Herm, Group Chief Operating Officer at Sky, emphasized the positive impact of transitioning to internet-delivered TV, citing the potential to bridge the digital divide through enhanced connectivity and skills development.

While some welcome the shift towards streaming services, concerns have been raised by those dependent on Freeview. A petition opposing the discontinuation of Freeview has garnered significant support, highlighting the challenges that some households may face in accessing TV content without traditional terrestrial broadcasting.

Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, expressed the importance of Freeview for her daily entertainment and information needs, emphasizing the simplicity and reliability of terrestrial TV compared to online streaming services.

Further updates on the evolution of television services are expected in the near future.
