TUI has provided a significant update following the tragic deaths of four British tourists who fell critically ill during their vacation on a picturesque island in Cape Verde. The families of these individuals are seeking justice and compensation from TUI, the tour operator they had booked their trips with.
Among the deceased were Elena Walsh from Birmingham, Mark Ashley from Bedfordshire, and Karen Pooley from Gloucestershire, as well as a 56-year-old man, who passed away within four months of each other last year after experiencing severe gastric symptoms, including diarrhea, while holidaying in Cape Verde. These deaths are part of a larger pattern, with six Britons having died in Cape Verde since 2023, and numerous others reporting similar illnesses.
Emma Ashley, the widow of one of the deceased tourists, shared that her husband became extremely sick during their holiday, which they had booked with TUI for over £3,000. Despite reporting his symptoms to TUI, his condition worsened upon their return to the UK, leading to his untimely death. Similarly, Karen Pooley, who also paid over £3,000 for her vacation through TUI, succumbed to illness within days of her trip and passed away due to multiple health complications.
The exact cause of these illnesses and deaths remains unknown, but TUI is actively investigating the claims alongside legal representatives. Over 1,500 individuals have reported falling ill after visiting Cape Verde, prompting concerns about hygiene standards and safety in the region.
Jatinder Paul, a lawyer representing the affected individuals, expressed shock at the scale and persistence of the illness outbreaks in Cape Verde. He emphasized the need for answers and accountability in ensuring the well-being of holidaymakers. TUI has responded by assuring a thorough investigation into the reported claims and reiterated its commitment to providing necessary support to customers facing health issues during their trips.
While TUI acknowledges the challenges, it also highlighted that some guests may not seek assistance during their illness, limiting the company’s ability to provide immediate help. The tour operator encourages open communication and prompt reporting of any health concerns to ensure the well-being of all travelers.
