A young woman in Belfast, Laura Taggart, found out about her pregnancy after waking from a coma caused by a spiked drink during her 18th birthday celebration. Laura experienced seizures and cardiac arrest, leading to a 16-minute period where her heart stopped. She was placed in a coma by medical professionals to stabilize her condition.
Upon regaining consciousness a week later, Laura was shocked to learn about her pregnancy, as she had no memory of events leading up to her coma. Despite avoiding lasting brain damage, Laura faced challenges during her pregnancy. Her water broke at 25 weeks, and doctors were concerned about the baby’s survival. However, she did not give birth until nine weeks later.
Her daughter, Lucia, was born prematurely at 34 weeks via an emergency caesarean section, weighing only 4lbs 11 ounces. Lucia spent a month in the neonatal intensive care unit before being able to go home. Laura then encountered health complications, including a severe chest infection that required her to undergo surgery and have a central line placed in her neck.
After a period in the hospital, Laura and Lucia were finally able to start their life together in their new home. Laura expressed gratitude for the support she received from her mother, healthcare professionals, and the charity TinyLife during this challenging time. She emphasized the seriousness of drink spiking and its potential life-altering consequences, urging others to recognize the dangers associated with it.
