“London Cracks Down on Pedicabs: Fare Caps & Licensing Rules Set”

Published on

A significant crackdown in London will see a ban on pedicab operators charging exorbitant fares and playing loud music under new regulations. Transport for London has introduced stringent rules requiring pedicab riders to obtain a license, meet language proficiency criteria, pass safety assessments, and have a driving theory test certificate. Pedicabs, commonly seen in the capital, have faced criticism for overcharging tourists and creating disturbances with loud music.

To address these issues, TfL has proposed fare caps for all rickshaw rides, limiting the base fare to £5 and pricing at £1 per minute for the first passenger, escalating to £3 per minute for additional passengers. Additionally, riders must acquire a vehicle license for £100 and a personal license for £114, both valid for one year. These new licensing regulations and fare restrictions are set to take effect on October 30 this year.

Apart from the fare concerns, pedicabs have been faulted for causing traffic disruptions by parking improperly and violating traffic rules. Concerns over safety standards have also been raised due to the lack of regulations. To address these issues, new standards mandate that pedicabs be roadworthy, equipped with number plates, and undergo regular safety inspections.

Pedicab operators will now need a physical presence in London, conduct fire risk assessments, and perform basic staff background checks. Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed satisfaction with the new regulations, aiming to enhance operational standards and ensure a safer and more professional industry. The goal is to provide a better experience for both customers and drivers, supporting the night-time economy and fostering a safer and greener environment in London.
