Four individuals tragically lost their lives following a tragic incident where a tourist boat capsized at a resort. Distressing video footage captured the moment the boat sank, causing panic among passengers. The vessel initially tilted to one side before suddenly flipping over, throwing passengers into the water without life jackets.
In the midst of the chaos, one man managed to climb onto the boat’s hull as it fully capsized. The heartbreaking event unfolded in Chuxiong, located in China’s Yunnan Province, during Lunar New Year celebrations on February 17th. A total of 26 people were thrown into the water during the incident, prompting a swift emergency response.
By 8:30 pm on the same day, two fatalities were confirmed, with two others receiving medical treatment. The death toll later rose to four, with the victims believed to have drowned. The condition of the 22 survivors remains undisclosed at this time.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident at the Lianxiwan Wetland Park resort, which opened in June 2025. The park, known for attracting around 150,000 visitors by November of the same year, offers various family-friendly activities such as flower displays, camping, and lake cruises.
In a separate incident, at least eight individuals perished in an explosion at a fireworks shop in eastern China. The blast, caused by improper fireworks use near the shop, resulted in tragic consequences. Following this event, the Ministry of Emergency Management has urged heightened supervision of fireworks production, transportation, sales, and usage to prevent future tragedies.
Chinese New Year, also referred to as Lunar New Year, marks the beginning of the new lunar calendar and is celebrated with various traditions including red decorations, fireworks, family gatherings, and the exchange of red envelopes containing money. The festival, which lasts for 15 days, signifies the start of a new year cycle based on the lunar calendar.
