Shocking new weather models indicate a potential blizzard that could blanket numerous major cities in snow as March kicks off.

According to the GFS weather model, a storm is projected to approach from the Atlantic early on March 2, initially bringing snow to higher elevations while lower areas experience rain. However, as the blizzard traverses the country, even low-lying regions may witness snowfall.

The onset of flurries is expected in Northern Ireland, parts of Wales, and western Scotland. By approximately 3 am on March 2, the maps suggest snowfall across a broad expanse from the West Midlands to northern Scotland.

Cities like Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, and Glasgow are likely to experience snow around this period. Southern England is forecasted to receive rainfall.

By around 6 am, the eastern coast of England, particularly Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, could see snow. Edinburgh and Glasgow might also encounter further snow as the storm envelops a significant portion of Scotland.

Snow coverage maps reveal that by 9 am, over half of the UK could be covered in snow, with only southern England and some areas near the England-Wales border escaping.

Fortunately, snow depth projections indicate relatively modest accumulations. The Scottish mountains may expect 15cm, while northern England, Northern Ireland, and North Wales could see 3cm, with just 1cm settling in North Wales.

BBC Weather hints at the possibility of wintry showers at the beginning of the upcoming month, with temperatures potentially rising slightly above average.

The BBC forecast for March 2 to 15 suggests that while confidence is lower than usual, there are indications of high pressure building near the UK, leading to relatively drier conditions with precipitation amounts near or below average. Daytime temperatures are anticipated to be near seasonal norms, potentially even above average, although some cooler conditions may prevail in Scotland.

There is a chance that high pressure could develop at higher latitudes, potentially resulting in a colder week with a higher likelihood of wintry showers, although extreme cold anomalies are not expected.
