Tourette’s advocate John Davidson shared his experiences of being harassed and physically attacked due to his condition prior to the BAFTA awards on Sunday. Davidson attended the prestigious event to show support for the highly acclaimed film “I Swear,” in which actor Robert Aramayo portrayed him. The movie chronicles Davidson’s upbringing in Scotland while living with Tourette syndrome.

During the ceremony, Davidson was heard vocalizing expletives, including a derogatory term, from the audience while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage. Despite the disruption, Jordan and Lindo continued their presentation without interruption. Davidson voluntarily left the event, as reported by Variety.

Tourette syndrome, as described by the NHS, is a disorder characterized by sudden, repetitive sounds or movements known as tics. While there is no cure, treatments are available to help manage the symptoms.

Before the incidents involving Jordan and Lindo, Davidson also made disruptive comments during BAFTA Chair Sarah Putt’s speech and during the acceptance speech for the best children’s and family film award. The BBC later issued an apology for any offense caused.

Prior to the ceremony, Davidson expressed his hope that the film would increase awareness and promote understanding and kindness towards individuals with his condition. He emphasized the film’s ability to shed light on the challenges he faced, such as assault, expulsion from school, and bullying.

Actor Robert Aramayo, who portrayed Davidson in the film, reiterated the importance of understanding Tourette’s as a condition characterized by tics, not intentional obscenities. Aramayo highlighted the film’s role in fostering a deeper understanding of Tourette syndrome and promoting constructive conversations.

“I Swear” received six BAFTA nominations, including Outstanding British Film, with Aramayo being nominated for Best Lead Actor and the EE Rising Star award. Director Kirk Jones praised Aramayo’s performance, stating that he was confident in casting him for the role early on. Jones emphasized the importance of portraying the story authentically without diluting its impact.

Jones expressed his belief that the film resonated with audiences due to its message of hope and resilience, especially in the current societal climate. He underscored the film’s relevance in promoting compassion, support, and understanding for individuals facing challenges.
