Australia has become the first of King Charles’ 14 realms to support the proposal to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession. Recent reports indicated that the UK government, led by Keir Starmer, was contemplating the removal of the disgraced former Duke of York from the line to the throne.

For Mountbatten-Windsor to be excluded from the succession, an Act of Parliament must be passed in agreement with the 14 British realms. Sources suggest that the government will initiate consultations after the completion of ongoing police investigations into the allegations against Mountbatten-Windsor. The King’s brother, who was arrested at his Norfolk residence and detained for 11 hours, had been under pressure to step down.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia has expressed his country’s support for removing Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession in a letter to Prime Minister Starmer. Albanese emphasized the seriousness of the allegations against Mountbatten-Windsor and the need for a thorough investigation.

Mountbatten-Windsor had his royal titles stripped by the King in October following revelations of his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Any changes to the line of succession would necessitate the agreement of the other Commonwealth countries where King Charles serves as the head of state.

Following his arrest, the King emphasized the importance of the law taking its course, with full support for the police investigations. Recent polling shows that a majority of Britons believe Andrew should be removed from the line of succession. MPs and party leaders have called for a statutory inquiry into the monarchy’s future.

Although Andrew’s last visit to Australia was in October 2019, discussions about a republic remain relevant. Prime Minister Albanese stated that the recent scandal involving Andrew would not trigger a new referendum on becoming a republic.

Searches at Mountbatten-Windsor’s former residence continued, with calls for a broader investigation into his past dealings with Epstein gaining momentum. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson indicated that the government would consider sensible proposals but emphasized the importance of allowing the police to complete their investigations first.
