An individual who survived the Aberfan mining disaster, one of the last remaining survivors, shared her ongoing haunting memories of the tragic event that occurred six decades ago.

Mair Morgan, now 84 years old, vividly recalls the horrific incident that claimed the lives of 116 children and 28 adults. She still carries the image of a young girl with beautiful curly black hair, whose remains she had to identify.

The disaster transpired when a colliery spoil tip collapsed, cascading down a mountain and engulfing the primary school and neighboring properties in the Welsh village of Aberfan. Teachers had the grim task of confirming the identities of the deceased children before notifying their families.

Mair, who was one of the few adults to survive the tragic events of October 21, 1966, expressed that the incident has left a lasting emotional scar.

Working at Pantglas Junior School at the time, Mair’s responsibility was to ring the bell for class commencement.

The instability of a large tip situated above the school, weakened by water, led to the catastrophic event that unfolded.

Recalling the moment of the disaster, Mair recounted hearing a distressing noise that prompted her to lead her students out of their classroom after noticing a collapsed playground wall.

Mair guided her students to safety on the main road outside the school, maintaining a composed demeanor to reassure both the children and the anxious parents arriving at the scene. While her pupils were unharmed, Mair bore witness to the aftermath of the tragedy, including the heart-wrenching loss experienced by some families.

Among the devastating casualties was Bill Evans, a teacher from a nearby school, who tragically lost his wife and baby, while his son, who was absent that day due to illness, survived.

Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Mair shared how she and a few colleagues were the sole teachers to survive, emphasizing the emotional toll caused by the loss of five of their fellow educators.

The immediate aftermath saw the school playground transformed into a temporary morgue, where surviving teachers were tasked with identifying the deceased children.

Mair recounted the challenging experience of being asked to identify the children’s bodies before they were cleaned up or their parents were notified, a task that weighs heavily on her to this day.

Despite the tragedy, Mair and some colleagues were able to resume teaching after a brief respite, fostering a sense of resilience and unity among the students of Aberfan.
