Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has introduced a new policy that will require asylum seekers granted refugee status to have their status reviewed every 30 months. This change marks a significant overhaul of the existing system, with refugees from countries deemed safe now expected to return under the revised measures.

Under the updated rules, refugees must renew their permission to stay or explore visa options like any other legal migrant starting this Monday. This process will involve meeting standard requirements, including the payment of associated fees.

During a recent visit to Denmark, known for its stringent asylum and immigration protocols, Cabinet minister Ms. Mahmood emphasized the importance of providing sanctuary to those escaping war and persecution. However, she highlighted the need to prevent the asylum system from incentivizing dangerous migration journeys and supporting human traffickers.

Ms. Mahmood stressed that while genuine refugees will find safety in the UK, efforts must be made to reduce incentives that attract individuals without a legitimate need for protection. As such, refugees will be expected to return to their home countries once conditions permit, aligning with a firm yet equitable approach to border control and safeguarding those fleeing conflict and oppression.

The Home Office clarified that adults arriving with accompanied children seeking asylum will receive a 30-month period of protection before undergoing a review. This change is not anticipated to affect individuals already granted asylum status. Unaccompanied children will continue to receive five years’ leave while a more permanent policy for this group is under consideration.

Despite these adjustments, Imran Hussain from the Refugee Council expressed concerns about the impact of short-term leave on refugee families, citing potential challenges with integration and stability. He emphasized the importance of allowing these individuals to establish roots, integrate into communities, learn English, and secure employment.

Additionally, the government plans to establish new safe and legal pathways for asylum seekers as part of its strategy to reduce the reliance on risky Channel crossings.
