Travelers Stranded in Middle East: Know Your Rights

Published on

Amid the ongoing conflict in certain regions of the Middle East, it is crucial for travelers to understand their rights regarding compensation for disruptions, delays, or cancellations to their travel plans. Recent days have seen the closure or restriction of major airports and airspaces, leading to the suspension or cancellation of flights from areas including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. This situation has left holidaymakers stranded and unsure about their return journeys.

To assist those affected, consumer rights advocate Which? has provided guidance on how to navigate the changing travel landscape and make claims for compensation. They advise individuals to monitor airline websites for updates on their travel schedules and explore available options. Additionally, travelers are urged to stay informed by checking the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) page for their destinations and transit countries, and to ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance coverage.

For individuals currently in affected areas, following local safety alerts is paramount. Passengers flying with UK or European airlines, or departing from the UK or EU, are entitled to rebooking or refunds for disrupted flights, along with provisions for food, accommodation, and transport expenses. However, travelers with non-European airlines, such as Etihad or Emirates, may encounter challenges as EU and UK air passenger rights do not cover their circumstances. It is recommended to contact the airline or travel agent directly to explore available solutions.

Which? cautions against accepting refunds if attempting to return home, as this action may waive the airline’s duty of care, leaving passengers responsible for additional costs. They also advise against canceling flights prematurely, as it could jeopardize rights to refunds and assistance. Before making any alterations to travel arrangements, it is advised to consult with the airline or travel provider to understand available options.

Moreover, individuals who have separately booked travel and accommodation are encouraged to check if hotels are offering flexible cancellations or modifications. Some travelers have successfully obtained refunds or rescheduled stays based on the host’s discretion. Staying informed and proactive in communication with relevant parties is key to navigating the complexities of disrupted travel plans.
