A woman expressed her shock after witnessing an elderly woman pass away alone in a hospital corridor without anyone by her side. Nadia Wainwright, from Henllan in North Wales, described the distressing incident at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital’s A&E department. She recounted how the elderly lady was left unattended, eventually covered with a blanket by a paramedic for dignity as she died in the crowded corridor.

Nadia highlighted the overcrowded and chaotic conditions in the A&E department, with patients occupying chairs and beds along the corridors. She emphasized the need for better care and attention to prevent such situations, especially for vulnerable individuals like the elderly.

Following the incident, Nadia shared that it took staff approximately five minutes to respond after the paramedic realized the woman had passed away. The handling of the situation left her deeply upset, as she had never witnessed such distressing circumstances before. She criticized the lack of sensitivity and timely response from the hospital staff.

Moreover, Nadia mentioned another elderly lady in her 80s who required assistance in the overflowing A&E department, further underscoring the challenges faced by patients and their families in such settings. Local councillors expressed outrage at the systemic issues within the hospital system, calling for urgent improvements to ensure dignified care for all patients.

In response to the incident, Angela Wood, the executive director of nursing and midwifery at the health board, acknowledged the distress caused by such events and emphasized the importance of providing care with dignity and compassion. She acknowledged the need for improvement in patient care and vowed to address the delays and challenges faced in the Emergency Departments.

The Welsh Government also expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the need to end the practice of providing care in undesignated areas. They emphasized the importance of patient safety, staff well-being, and efficient patient flow within hospitals. Additionally, they allocated additional funding to address staffing needs and enhance emergency and community services for better patient care.
