A longstanding memorial and headstone company known as the oldest in its area has been banned from local cemeteries after operating for 138 years.

Mackie Memorials, based in Wirral, specializing in custom memorials and headstones, is currently facing scrutiny from Wirral Council and Merseyside Police. The company, previously known as E. F. Mackie Limited and situated on Rake Lane in Wallasey, was acquired by Thomas Smith in 2023, who later established a branch on Liscard Way. Mackie Memorials claims to have provided around 100,000 headstones since its establishment in 1887, including notable projects such as the Beatles statues, the Anglican Cathedral, and Everton Football Club’s Goodison Park.

Following complaints received by Wirral Council’s cemetery service, the council is urging individuals to report any grievances with the company to the police. Mackie Memorials has been barred from operating in council cemeteries, with Merseyside Police collaborating with the local authority to address the issues raised. Residents are encouraged to report any concerns through official channels, including Report Fraud and Merseyside Police.

A spokesperson for Wirral Council confirmed the company’s suspension from council cemeteries and potential exclusion from the Memorial Mason Registration Scheme due to its behavior. Companies House records show that Mackie Memorials Limited’s accounts are overdue, with an application filed to strike off the company. However, the compulsory strike-off action has been halted, as announced by Companies House.

Mr. Smith, who took over the business in 2023, emphasized the importance of maintaining the company’s longstanding reputation and role in the community. He acknowledged the challenges of upholding a legacy of over 135 years but expressed pride in the significant role of the business in people’s grief journeys.
