A 25-year-old British national is currently facing potential life imprisonment in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Antonia Bettridge, originally from St Helens in Merseyside, relocated to Dubai in November 2023, where she initially worked as a sports coach before transitioning into the property sector and pursuing qualifications as a personal trainer, as per legal representatives from Detained in Dubai (DID).
While the exact date of the 25-year-old’s arrest remains unclear, it is believed to have taken place at the beginning of the previous month. Legal advisors have confirmed that she is being held under the narcotics legislation of the United Arab Emirates on suspicion of “possession of narcotics with intent to promote.” If convicted, this offense carries a potential AED 200,000 fine and life imprisonment, with Dubai authorities not requiring proof of intent to promote or distribute, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Antonia’s mother, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed deep concern about her daughter’s situation, highlighting Antonia’s dedication to fitness and healthy living. She emphasized that Antonia moved to Dubai with the intention of building a positive future for herself and the family is devastated and seeking clarity on the situation.
Radha Stirling, the CEO of Detained in Dubai, who has been providing assistance to the family, emphasized the heightened worry caused by regional conflicts in the Middle East for families of individuals detained in the UAE. She stressed the importance of allowing defendants to prepare their cases outside of detention, especially during times of regional instability.
Antonia had previously appeared in Liverpool Crown Court in September 2023, where she was found guilty of possessing criminal property after police officers discovered a significant amount of money in her possession during a routine stop. Following this incident, she faced legal consequences and was required to fulfill a community order along with associated court costs.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that they are actively supporting the British woman detained in the UAE and maintaining communication with local authorities. British expatriates residing in Dubai have been advised to remain vigilant due to escalating regional tensions related to ongoing conflicts and airspace closures impacting travel in the Middle East.
