“IRA Victims Sue Gerry Adams for £1 in Landmark Trial”

Published on

Gerry Adams is entering an English courtroom for the first time this week to defend against a legal action brought by three individuals injured in IRA bombings. The court case aims to determine whether the Sinn Fein leader had ties to the IRA. The lawsuit, seeking a symbolic £1, is taking place at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. One of the victims, Jonathan Ganesh, emphasized that the lawsuit is not about money but about seeking justice and the truth.

Expressing his motivation for the legal action, Ganesh stated that he is participating in memory of his friends who lost their lives in a 1996 bombing. He highlighted the importance of uncovering the truth for all victims of IRA terrorism. Ganesh, who was harmed in the IRA Docklands bomb incident, along with two others, alleges that Adams held a commanding role within the IRA during the 1970s and 1990s.

The claimants are seeking damages of £1 as a symbolic gesture to address the losses and damages they suffered due to the incidents attributed to Adams. The legal costs for the case were raised through a crowdfunding campaign named “Gerry Adams Time for Truth,” with over 2,200 donations contributing £108,000.

Ganesh expressed the need for closure through the court proceedings and emphasized the significance of holding Adams accountable. He mentioned that the IRA attempted to kill him with Libyan Semtex, showing no remorse. The trial, presided over by Mr. Justice Soole without a jury, is expected to span seven days. Solicitor Matt Jury, representing the complainants, highlighted the historic nature of Adams being cross-examined by the victims in an English court for the first time.

In response to the case, Adams’s spokesperson mentioned the long time gap since the incidents and the Good Friday agreement but noted the presence of former British Army and intelligence services witnesses to support the claims against Adams. The spokesperson highlighted the political sensitivities surrounding the case, indicating opposition from certain quarters with deep-rooted hostility towards republicans.

The legal action involves multiple victims, including Ganesh, John Clark injured in the 1973 Old Bailey bombing, and Barry Laycock, a victim of the 1996 Arndale Centre bombing in Manchester. The case is expected to shed light on Adams’s alleged involvement with the IRA during the tumultuous period of conflict.
