Mixed Reactions Await Meghan and Harry in Australia

Published on

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been advised to prepare themselves for potential criticism during their upcoming visit to Australia in mid-April. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are scheduled to engage in various private, business, and charitable activities in both Sydney and Melbourne, involving interactions with Australia’s armed forces and veterans.

Their previous visit to the country took place shortly after their wedding nearly eight years ago, attracting large crowds. However, there is speculation that public opinion towards them has shifted, with doubts about the warm reception they may receive this time around.

An insider suggested that there could be mixed reactions to their visit, with both monarchists and republicans likely to express differing views on the royal family’s role. This visit comes closely after King Charles’ recent trip to the United States, raising interest and anticipation.

Notably, Prince William and King Charles are reportedly facing some unease over the timing of Harry and Meghan’s trip, which was arranged on short notice compared to visits by other working royals. The Australian Prime Minister previously extended an invitation for the Prince and Princess of Wales to tour the country, hinting at the complexities surrounding royal engagements and public sentiment.

Royal journalist Tom Sykes highlighted that the Sussexes are expected to be at the center of discussions regarding the royal family and Australia’s constitutional future during their visit. The couple may encounter challenges, as they are no longer guaranteed a warm reception in a country where opinions have evolved.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed their upcoming visit for various engagements in mid-April, emphasizing their commitment to participating in private, business, and philanthropic activities. Meanwhile, their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will remain in Montecito, California, during the trip. Meghan’s pregnancy with Archie during their last Australian tour in 2018 adds a sentimental touch to their return.

In light of the potential reception, the Sussexes are gearing up for a visit that could stir debate and reflection on the changing dynamics between the royal family and the public in Australia.
