Renowned author Len Deighton, a recipient of the prestigious BAFTA award, has passed away at the age of 97. He was best known for crafting 39 espionage novels that revolutionized the landscape of British spy literature.
Deighton rose to prominence with his debut novel, The Ipcress File, in 1962, which later inspired a BAFTA-winning movie featuring Michael Caine. In a recent adaptation by ITV in March 2022, Joe Cole from Peaky Blinders portrayed the lead character in this gripping thriller.
Often likened to fellow writer John le Carré, Deighton and le Carré were instrumental in reshaping British spy fiction by infusing it with a more brazen, disillusioned, and cynical narrative style.
In remembrance of Deighton, one admirer expressed, “An inspiration during my youth – a truly remarkable storyteller.” Another fan shared their sentiments, stating, “His spy novels were captivating. A significant loss to the literary world.”
Len Deighton, who was married twice to Shirley Thompson and Ysabele successively, was a devoted family man with two sons. Born in a London workhouse in 1929, Deighton’s upbringing was influenced by his father’s occupation as a chauffeur and his mother’s profession as a hotel cook.
At the age of 11, Deighton witnessed a neighbor in Gloucester being arrested for espionage, an event that likely shaped his future as a writer. This incident bore resemblance to the intrigue found in his own thrilling novels.
While vacationing in France, Deighton penned The Ipcress File, which quickly gained both commercial success and critical acclaim. His subsequent spy novels featuring a nameless, cynical protagonist offered a stark contrast to Ian Fleming’s suave James Bond character.
In addition to his espionage works, Deighton had a passion for writing cookery books, particularly focusing on French cuisine.
