“IRA Bombing Victims Demand New Investigation into Gerry Adams”

Published on

Three individuals who lost family members in IRA bombings have sent a letter to the Metropolitan Police, urging them to investigate new “evidence” presented in a recent High Court case involving Gerry Adams. Ihsen Bashir, Sarah Butt, and Susan Dodd were left distraught when the case against Adams was dropped due to a controversial legal decision.

In their communication to Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, they emphasized the importance of not forgetting their loved ones and called for a thorough examination of Adams’ connections to the IRA. Susan Dodd, whose father was killed in the 1983 Harrods bomb, stressed the need for a comprehensive inquiry.

The letter, titled “Request for review of evidence aired in the civil proceedings against Gerry Adams in the High Court in London,” requested that the police treat it as a formal plea for review and forward it promptly to appropriate investigators and counter-terrorism experts.

The family members of IRA bombing victims highlighted the significance of the evidence presented during the civil proceedings against Adams, which began on March 9, 2026. They underscored the need for a criminal investigation based on the new material and existing records, emphasizing the efforts made by victims to bring the case to light.

Acknowledging the receipt of the letter, the commissioner assured a prompt response. The family members detailed their presence at the trial, where compelling evidence was presented, raising doubts about Adams’ claimed role and his alleged ties to the IRA. They clarified that their aim was not to presume guilt but to request a thorough review of the evidence for a reasoned decision on potential criminal implications.

The family members emphasized the importance of not leaving the families of bombing victims in uncertainty and urged the police to consider whether further action was warranted based on the evidence. They reiterated their request for a formal review by senior investigating officers and counter-terrorism specialists.

The recent case against Adams was terminated, with no costs imposed, after the claimants alleged his personal liability for injuries sustained in IRA attacks in London and Manchester. Adams, denying any involvement in the attacks, strongly refuted claims of being a significant figure in the IRA. Anne Studd KC, representing the victims, linked the case’s discontinuation to an argument surrounding the “abuse of process.”
