A man invested £90,000 in surrogacy to fulfill his dream of single fatherhood, expressing unwavering commitment to the journey. Ted Buras, at 18, envisioned fatherhood while peers focused on social gatherings, having even selected a name for his future teenage son. “I planned to name him Chase, but circumstances led me to give that name to my pet dog instead,” he reflected.
Following a challenging surrogacy process during the early stages of the Covid pandemic, Ted now embraces fatherhood with his six-year-old son, Beau. However, his online disclosure of the surrogacy experience triggered a wave of cyberbullying tactics, including publicizing his personal details, sending unwanted deliveries, and online abuse.
Despite facing adversity, Ted opted to remain visible online, citing messages from individuals who found inspiration in his journey as a motivating factor. At 47, residing in Denver, Colorado, Ted had assumed fatherhood would accompany a romantic relationship. Yet, after a prolonged relationship yielded no offspring, he chose an independent path.
Consulting an agency, Ted navigated challenges in the surrogacy process, including fertility complications and financial strain amounting to $120,000 (£90,000). Through assisted reproduction, four viable embryos were created, one of which potentially fulfilling Ted’s desire for a son.
Following a tumultuous journey, Ted connected with a supportive surrogate in Kentucky, where the embryo transfer occurred while he was on a remote Arctic expedition. Despite challenges, he communicated his embryo preference remotely, leading to the conception of his son, Beau, in April 2020.
The birth, amid Covid restrictions, restricted initial interactions, but Ted cherished his first moments with Beau, emphasizing the profound experience. Adjusting to single fatherhood, Ted found unexpected ease in the role, highlighting Beau’s exceptional qualities and their strong familial support network.
Balancing work as an app developer and family responsibilities, Ted embraces his role as “just a parent,” emphasizing adaptability and the joy of fatherhood. Reflecting on his journey, Ted remains resolute, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to become a father despite the challenges faced.
