“Rare Photos Inside Chernobyl 4 Decades Later”

Published on

As the conflict in Ukraine persists, disturbing new visuals have surfaced from within the location of the world’s most catastrophic nuclear incident.

Photographer Genya Savilov, in collaboration with Greenpeace, has been granted rare entry into the site of the worst nuclear calamity in history.

Greenpeace has cautioned that an uncontrolled collapse of the internal radiation containment structure at the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear facility in Ukraine could heighten the risk of releasing radioactivity into the surroundings.

Our photo gallery showcases the eerie present-day reality of the facility, nearly four decades after the 1986 blast dispersed radioactive particles worldwide.

On April 26, 1986, an explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine triggered the release of radioactive particles into the air.

While numerous individuals perished in the immediate aftermath of the incident, the long-term death toll from radiation exposure is estimated to be in the thousands.

Oleksandr Skomarokhov, Chornobyl’s deputy technical director for radioactive waste management, is seen using a phone in the control room of the inactive reactor 3.

Various scenes from inside the control room of the non-operational reactor 3 are depicted, including a panel and engineers working in front of monitors.

A cautionary radioactivity sign is displayed on a panel within the destroyed fourth block of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Engineers are pictured conversing in front of monitors within the New Safe Confinement, a metal dome housing the sarcophagus enclosing the ruined fourth reactor.

A radiation protection engineer is shown working in front of the sarcophagus covering the destroyed fourth reactor.

Oleksandr Skomarokhov is captured speaking on a mobile phone within the so-called golden corridor at the nuclear plant, leading to the control rooms of reactors 3 and 4.

Individuals are depicted inspecting protective masks before entering the control room of the destroyed fourth block, dressed in protective clothing.

Valery Khodemchuk, the first victim of the Chornobyl disaster and senior circulating pump operator of the fourth block, is commemorated on the wall between blocks 3 and 4.

The exterior features the Prometheus monument dating back to the plant’s construction, while representatives of Greenpeace and the media tour the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
