Two police officers are facing charges related to the tragic incident in London where a pregnant woman and her unborn child lost their lives in a collision involving a police car.

The 38-year-old woman was fatally injured in a crash with an unmarked police vehicle on Eltham Road on October 17, 2024. Despite efforts to save the unborn baby, the child did not survive, and the woman passed away in the hospital due to her injuries.

PC Chris Johnson, aged 56, has been accused of causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins, aged 35, faces charges of dangerous driving. These charges stem from an investigation initiated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the tragic accident.

PC Johnson serves with the Metropolitan Police Taskforce, while former PC Tomkins was also part of the same unit when the collision occurred. Both officers are scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 28.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Derham, overseeing policing in Greenwich, expressed condolences to the woman’s family and friends, acknowledging the profound loss they are enduring. He described the incident as truly tragic and heart-wrenching.

Acknowledging the thorough investigation by the IOPC, Derham emphasized the importance of refraining from making statements that could influence the upcoming court proceedings. Therefore, further comments on the matter were deemed inappropriate at this stage.
