Spain has sought assistance from China following a dispute with Donald Trump. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to play a role in resolving conflicts in the Middle East, particularly the situation in Iran and other regions like Ukraine. Sánchez emphasized China’s unique global influence in addressing these issues during his visit to Beijing.
The request for Chinese intervention comes in the aftermath of Trump’s threat to sever trade ties with Spain for refusing to allow the US to utilize its military bases for potential strikes on Iran. Sánchez denounced US and Israeli military actions in Iran as unjustified and a breach of international law, leading to further tensions between the two nations due to Spain’s resistance to Trump’s calls for increased defense spending among NATO allies.
In a recent statement, Trump claimed that China had agreed not to supply weapons to Iran and expressed satisfaction with US operations in the Strait of Hormuz. He highlighted his efforts to ensure the free passage of vessels through the strait, attributing this success to cooperation with China. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping commented on the deteriorating global order amid Iran’s threats to block the Red Sea in response to the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
During discussions with Sánchez, Xi Jinping remarked on the chaotic state of the current international order, underscoring the need for stability and cooperation in addressing global challenges.
