A memorial service honoring the late snooker legend John Virgo is set to take place at Sheffield Cathedral today, nearly two months after his passing. The event is expected to be attended by various snooker icons, including Dennis Taylor, a close friend of Virgo, and Virgo’s widow, Rosie Ries. Scheduled to commence at 1pm, guests are anticipated to start arriving around 12.30pm. Fans are invited to join the cathedral service, although only 600 spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Following the service, a reception will be hosted at Sheffield Town Hall from 2.30pm to 5pm, offering drinks and canapes. Known as “JV” to friends and fans, Virgo passed away at the age of 79 at his residence in Mijas Costa, Spain, in February.
Ken Doherty, the 1997 World Champion, and snooker’s Master of Ceremonies, Rob Walker, have organized the service to provide an opportunity for the snooker community and Sheffield residents to commemorate Virgo’s life.
Former world champions such as John Higgins, Shaun Murphy, and Dennis Taylor have been spotted arriving at the event. Additionally, Cliff Thorburn and current player Stuart Bingham have also made their way to the service. Notable attendees include seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry and John Parrott. Ken Doherty, a close friend of Virgo, has also arrived.
Fans, including Phil Hudson, who traveled from Telford, are beginning to gather at the venue. Phil, sporting a t-shirt in honor of Virgo, expressed his sentiments, saying, “I just wanted to pay my respects to him really. He was a great man, he’ll be truly missed at this year’s World Championships.”
