A nurse at St Peter and St James Hospice in Lewes, East Sussex, named Naomi Butcher, has been removed from her position for engaging in inappropriate behavior. Butcher, aged 60, committed severe medical errors by administering a dangerously high dose of Midazolam, a common hospice medication, to a terminally ill patient, putting their life at risk. She failed to report the mistake and falsely claimed to have given the correct dosage.
Furthermore, Butcher declined a family’s request to visit their deceased loved one, citing unfounded reasons that they “burn bodies in caravans.” Despite her denial, a report by the Nursing and Midwifery Council Fitness to Practise Committee found evidence supporting this claim, along with a pattern of misconduct that posed harm to vulnerable patients and displayed discriminatory behavior.
The committee also noted instances where Butcher incorrectly administered medications or omitted doses, highlighting a series of medical errors. As a result, Butcher has been struck off the nursing register due to her consistent misconduct and disregard for patient safety.
During a hearing, it was revealed that Butcher had made a disturbing bet with colleagues predicting a patient’s death on Christmas Day, showing a lack of empathy and professionalism. The panel deemed her behavior degrading and potentially distressing to patients and their families.
Despite Butcher’s admission to most allegations against her, she disputed the comments about the traveler family and their funeral practices. The panel concluded that her misconduct impaired her fitness to practice, especially considering her failure to challenge the documented evidence.
