Gardening Guru Alan Titchmarsh Downsizes to Surrey

Published on

Renowned gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh is embarking on a challenging endeavor following a significant lifestyle change alongside his wife Alison. The couple, who tied the knot back in 1975, recently made the decision to downsize their residence, bidding farewell to their £3.5 million property on the outskirts of Hampshire’s New Forest. They have transitioned to a more contemporary home in Surrey, where their adult daughters are already settled.

Alan has expressed mixed feelings about the move, acknowledging the emotional attachment gardeners often have to their outdoor spaces. Describing his new garden as reminiscent of a traditional English cottage garden, he highlighted its intricate layout with an array of nooks, crannies, and various plant beds. However, he also noted the challenges posed by the overgrown woodland surrounding the garden, likening it to a jungle.

In an article for BBC Gardeners’ World magazine, Alan shared his daunting task of revitalizing an acre of woodland on acidic soil, which had been left unattended for years, resulting in a dense thicket of plants. Despite the challenges, he highlighted the surviving flora in the woodland, including rhododendrons, azaleas, pieris, camellias, and leucothoe, alongside an abundance of laurel plants.

Expressing excitement about rejuvenating the once-charming woodland garden, Alan mentioned additional features like an artificial stream bed and a partially filled pond. While acknowledging the difficulties of maintaining a pond in a wooded area, he felt compelled to restore it. He also noted the presence of smaller gardens scattered throughout the property.

Although hesitant to disrupt the existing garden, Alan has already begun the process of tidying up flowerbeds and contemplating future enhancements. He emphasized the garden’s harmonious relationship with the house, appreciating its natural design that seamlessly blends trees, shrubs, perennials, and a tranquil pond.

During a stroll around his garden, Alan discovered a weathered tree with two chairs beneath it, envisioning its potential for improvement. Additionally, he shared details about his upcoming television show, Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, featuring guests like actor Martin Clunes, actress Anne Reid, and author Anthony Horowitz.

As Alan embarks on this new chapter in his gardening journey, viewers can anticipate witnessing the transformation of his woodland garden and the evolution of his new sanctuary.
