Several passengers aboard an EasyJet flight were shocked when the pilot announced that five individuals needed to disembark for the plane to take off. The incident occurred on a flight from Southend Airport to Malaga on April 11, where the captain informed passengers that the aircraft was too heavy, and some travelers had to leave to ensure a safe departure.

One passenger, Kelly Wayand, expressed disbelief at the situation, stating that she initially thought it was a joke. The pilot emerged from the cockpit and informed passengers that either six people had to deplane or all luggage would remain in Southend. Eventually, five passengers volunteered to exit the aircraft to resolve the weight issue.

Carly Mowbray, another passenger, mentioned that the departing passengers received applause from those who remained onboard. The flight eventually departed, experiencing a slight delay but within a reasonable timeframe. EasyJet later clarified that the weight restrictions were due to weather conditions and runway limitations, ensuring passenger safety remained a priority.

The airline facilitated alternative travel arrangements for the volunteers, offering a later flight to Malaga from London Gatwick at no additional cost. EasyJet also assured compensation in compliance with regulations. Passengers affected by denied boarding are entitled to compensation under UK261 regulations, based on the duration of the delay.
