In the wake of Scott Mills’ dismissal from the BBC following allegations of historical sexual misconduct, his former co-worker Jeremy Vine has broken his silence. The 60-year-old radio and TV host, who had collaborated with Scott, expressed his shock and sadness upon hearing the news of Scott’s termination.
The alleged incident is said to have occurred between 1997 and 2000 when Scott, now 53, was in his mid-20s. Despite being questioned by police in 2018 under caution, the Crown Prosecution Service did not pursue the case in 2010 due to insufficient evidence.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Jeremy described Scott as a highly respected individual among their peers and shared that he reached out to offer support after learning of the BBC’s decision. Jeremy initially thought the situation was a prank or technical glitch before realizing its seriousness.
Jeremy went on to reveal that the ordeal had been emotionally draining for him. Drawing a comparison with another colleague, Huw Edwards, Jeremy highlighted Scott’s popularity and noted Huw’s different approach to leadership.
Scott was recently spotted in public for the first time since his dismissal from his high-paying role. Witnesses within the broadcasting industry reacted with audible astonishment upon learning of Scott’s termination, with BBC News correspondent Sima Kotecha describing the newsroom’s reaction as filled with gasps.
Kotecha emphasized the significance of the event, suggesting that Scott’s dismissal must have been prompted by substantial reasons given his stature within the BBC. Scott had taken over Zoe Ball’s position on BBC Radio 2 the previous year.
