A man convicted of child molestation in 2002, Bradley D. Armstrong, 66, was apprehended by police just before his wedding ceremony. The arrest took place as Armstrong failed to disclose his status as a sexual violent predator on his marriage license application, a felony offense in Indiana. Concerns arose after the arrest, leading to a court motion to prevent Armstrong from marrying a 22-year-old bride with multiple disabilities who is legally declared incompetent and pregnant.
Heather Stevens, a county clerk, intervened due to the bride’s vulnerable condition, which includes autism, fetal alcohol syndrome, ADHD, functional movement disorder, delayed speech, and depression. Stevens, normally not involved in such matters, flagged multiple concerns surrounding the attempted marriage, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the bride’s well-being.
In a separate ruling, the court deemed the woman incompetent in 2021, appointing her parents as legal guardians. Despite the uncertainty about her parents’ stance on the relationship, Stevens highlighted the court’s authority to override parental decisions in cases involving legally incompetent individuals. As per state law, Stevens confirmed that her office would not issue a marriage license to Armstrong and the 22-year-old due to the bride’s legal status.
Armstrong was subsequently released on a $750 cash bond after the scheduled wedding date of March 17. The situation remains under legal scrutiny to ensure the protection and best interests of the vulnerable bride.
