“90-Year-Old Umpire Marks 75th Cricket Season”

Published on

Keith Dibb, a 90-year-old umpire from Britain, has returned for his 75th cricket season, making him the oldest umpire in the country. With over 1,000 matches under his belt, Dibb has traveled to countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Barbados, always carrying his umpire’s coat even on holidays.

Despite undergoing two shoulder surgeries and a knee replacement, Dibb continues to officiate matches every weekend. Now residing in Leeds, he shares his vast experience by mentoring new officials in the sport.

Reflecting on his cricket journey, Dibb expressed gratitude for the people he has met over the years. Having started his cricket passion at 13 in North Yorkshire, he vividly recalls watching Don Bradman’s remarkable innings at Headingley.

Tragically, Dibb lost his wife of 59 years to COVID-19, who had been a constant presence by his side during matches. Standing tall at 6ft 4in, Dibb humorously recounted being mistaken for a police officer by players on the field.

Dibb narrated a recent incident where he had to handle a disruptive player during a match, leading to the intervention of law enforcement. Despite the occasional controversies, Dibb cherishes the camaraderie and memorable moments he has experienced in the sport.

In his new role mentoring aspiring umpires, Dibb emphasizes the importance of maintaining a friendly spirit in the game. He also advocates for women’s cricket, recalling a talented female player he witnessed at Headingley, highlighting the evolving landscape of the sport.
