Mevagissey Residents Rally Against Clifftop Luxury Homes

Published on

Residents in Mevagissey are outraged by plans to build more luxury homes on a renowned clifftop area dubbed ‘millionaire’s row’. Local opposition led to the rejection of proposals for additional housing in the picturesque fishing village, known for its appeal to celebrities and soaring property prices that have made it unaffordable for many residents.

The contentious application sought approval for up to eight new properties near Mevagissey CP School, drawing objections from residents like Garth Shephard, a former parish council member. Shephard criticized the proposal for targeting the most scenic spot in the village to construct expensive million-pound houses, emphasizing that Mevagissey’s beauty should be accessible to everyone, not just the affluent.

Despite planning officers recommending approval, concerns were raised about the impact on the National Landscape and the lack of affordable housing in the area. Cornwall Council’s central area planning committee ultimately voted against the development, with Shephard advocating for more support for local residents struggling to afford homes in the increasingly exclusive village.

Mevagissey, known for its charm as a filming location and tourism hotspot, has seen a surge in second home ownership, making it financially challenging for locals, especially those working in the fishing and hospitality sectors. Shephard highlighted the existing housing affordability crisis, citing the exorbitant prices of properties and the negative impact of luxury developments on the village’s character and environment.

The developer, Westcountry Land Enterprises (SW) Ltd, argued for the necessity of new housing amid a national housing crisis and changes in planning policies favoring development. Despite the developer’s persistence, the parish council and residents have successfully opposed multiple attempts to build high-end homes on the clifftop, emphasizing the need for affordable housing solutions that cater to the local community’s needs.
