Legal Claim Dismissed: Amy Winehouse’s Father Loses Case

Published on

Mitch Winehouse, the father of Amy Winehouse, has had his legal claim against two of his daughter’s friends dismissed by the High Court. The dispute arose from the sale of items that once belonged to the late singer. Acting as the administrator of Amy’s estate, Mitch sued stylist Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourley, alleging that they had profited from auctioning off several of Amy’s possessions.

The items in question were auctioned in the United States between 2021 and 2023. Amy Winehouse tragically passed away at the age of 27 due to alcohol poisoning at her residence in Camden, North London, on July 23, 2011.

Deputy High Court judge Sarah Clarke KC, in a ruling on Monday, stated that neither Parry nor Gourley intentionally hid any disputed items from Mitch. Even if there was concealment, the judge mentioned that Mitch could have discovered the items with proper diligence.

In a hearing last year, Mitch’s legal team argued that Naomi and Catriona failed to inform him about the auctions, leading to the necessity of legal action for clarity. Conversely, Parry and Gourley, alongside their legal representatives, maintained that the sold items were either gifts from Amy or already in their possession.

Mitch’s lawyer, Henry Legge KC, previously alleged that Catriona and Naomi deliberately concealed their actions regarding the auctioned items. However, Naomi, in a written statement, claimed that the Winehouse family was aware of her auctioning activities following a meeting in October 2018. She expressed her belief that Amy would have wanted them to be financially secure and criticized the inflated sums demanded by Mitch.

A significant auction item included a silk mini-dress worn by Amy during her final performance in Belgrade, which was sold by Parry for $243,200 (£182,656). Gourley mentioned in her statement that shortly after Amy’s funeral, Mitch was giving away Amy’s belongings to fans outside her home, indicating his knowledge of Amy’s generous gifting practices.

The court proceedings shed light on the complexities surrounding the ownership and sale of Amy Winehouse’s personal effects, emphasizing different perspectives on the matter.
