President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a plan that would allow Iran to restart uranium enrichment in about ten years. Trump has provided varying justifications for the conflict with Iran but has consistently emphasized the goal of preventing the country from obtaining nuclear weapons.
A new proposal suggests that Iran would pause uranium enrichment for several years before gradually resuming the production of low-enriched uranium over the next decade. It is rumored that Trump proposed a 20-year suspension to avoid similarities with the 2015 nuclear agreement, which he terminated.
The previous nuclear agreement, negotiated during Barack Obama’s presidency, prohibited Iran from enriching uranium beyond civilian levels for a 15-year period.
