Police responded to a chaotic scene at a park in a North Carolina town following a planned altercation that turned deadly, resulting in two fatalities. The incident, described as a “mass shooting,” occurred at Leinbach Park in Winston-Salem involving multiple young individuals, leaving several injured. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NC SBI) confirmed the tragic outcome of the altercation that took place around 9:52 am local time.
While Winston-Salem police have not disclosed the exact number of victims, the NC SBI reported that “several people” sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. Authorities clarified that the shooting occurred near Jefferson Middle School, not on school grounds, urging the public to steer clear of the area temporarily.
In the aftermath, investigators advised against using personal drones near the site to avoid hindering emergency operations, as police drones are actively deployed in the search for individuals involved in the altercation. Despite identifying and locating several individuals linked to the incident, including both victims and suspects, efforts to ensure accountability for all parties are ongoing due to the scale of the altercation. The Winston-Salem Police Department noted that some of those involved were minors.
Preliminary inquiries indicated that a planned confrontation among young individuals at the park escalated into a violent exchange of gunfire, resulting in multiple casualties. The suspects involved in the shooting are still at large, warranting an ongoing and intensive investigation in the vicinity of Leinbach Park on Sally Kirk Rd. Law enforcement presence remains significant as the investigation continues.
While nearby schools are operating normally, authorities urged community members to avoid the area to facilitate the safe operations of emergency responders. Additionally, the public was encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to assist the investigation.
