“Sycamore Gap Vandal Released Early, Accomplice Stays in Jail”

Published on

Vandal Daniel Graham, one of the perpetrators responsible for cutting down the historic Sycamore Gap tree, will be staying behind bars until next year while his accomplice, Adam Carruthers, has been released early under a government program. Graham, aged 40, and Carruthers, aged 33, both received a four-year and three-month sentence last April. Carruthers chopped down the tree to keep as a ‘trophy’ for his newborn child and was released after just 10 months under the early release scheme.

Graham, who recorded the act of destruction, is scheduled to be released in January 2027, serving approximately 10 months more than Carruthers. The early release program allows offenders to serve part of their sentence at home while wearing an electronic tag and adhering to strict daily schedules.

The decision on early release is determined individually for each prisoner, even if the crimes and sentences are identical. Graham, who spent time in custody before the trial, remains in prison undergoing assessments for potential release under the Home Detention Curfew Scheme.

Steve Blair, the general manager at Twice Brewed Inn near Sycamore Gap, expressed surprise at Carruthers’ early release. The pub, frequented by visitors exploring Hadrian’s Wall, was a popular destination for those interested in seeing the iconic tree.

During the trial, Mrs. Justice Lambert mentioned that the convicted individuals would serve a maximum of 40% of their sentences, making them eligible for release in January 2027. Carruthers was seen last week after being released early, likely as early as March 15, following his act of cutting down the tree to commemorate his daughter’s birth.

Both Graham and Carruthers attempted to cover up their actions with false statements, with Carruthers claiming ignorance of the consequences. Locals described the pair as Graham being unpopular and Carruthers lacking intelligence. The Ministry of Justice emphasized that individuals released under the program are closely monitored, must comply with strict conditions, and can face return to prison for any violations.
