In a recent Westminster Hall debate, Labour MP Tracy Gilbert raised concerns about online ‘mega-brothels’ that offer women for sex, labeling them as “crime scenes” fueling extensive human trafficking operations in the UK. Gilbert called for the immediate shutdown of adult services sites like Adultwork and Vivastreet, emphasizing their role in perpetuating industrial-scale exploitation.
According to Gilbert, these websites are directly linked to human trafficking activities in Scotland and throughout the UK, enabling large-scale sex trafficking operations. She urged government intervention to close down these platforms, hold their operators accountable, and provide justice to victims who have long been exploited.
Gilbert, representing Edinburgh North and Leith, highlighted the urgent need to address the prevalent issue of sex trafficking facilitated by online mega-brothels. She stressed that the existing human trafficking laws in Scotland would cover platforms like Vivastreet and Adultwork, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the necessity for immediate action.
Moreover, Gilbert criticized the previous government for its association with adult services sites and emphasized the need for a review of prostitution laws in England and Wales. She expressed concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable individuals within the online sex industry and called for stricter regulations to prevent criminal activities on these platforms.
The Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner echoed these sentiments, describing adult services sites as tools for abuse that enable organized crime and exploitation. The Commissioner urged authorities to take stringent action against these websites to protect vulnerable individuals and combat criminal profiteering.
In response, Vivastreet emphasized its commitment to safety regulations and compliance with the Online Safety Act, implementing measures to detect and remove potentially exploitative content. The platform highlighted its cooperation with law enforcement agencies to address suspicious activities and ensure the safety of users.
The ongoing debate surrounding online sex trafficking and exploitation underscores the need for regulatory reforms and proactive measures to safeguard individuals at risk. Authorities are urged to prioritize the protection of vulnerable individuals and hold online platforms accountable for their role in facilitating criminal activities.
