Helen Skelton Leaves BBC Dream Job

Published on

Helen Skelton recently shared details about her decision to leave her highly coveted position at the BBC, which she dubbed her “dream job.” The 42-year-old made the announcement in 2023, revealing her departure from her Sunday show on BBC Radio 5 Live after just a year.

Expressing the challenges she faced juggling her busy schedule and being a mother to three children, Helen openly discussed her reasons for stepping away from the role. Her split from Richie Myler in 2022 added another layer of complexity to her personal life, as they co-parent their three children, aged between three and nine.

In her departure announcement, she mentioned that although she didn’t want to leave, it was a decision that would bring happiness to her eight-year-old child. Speaking on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast in February, Helen emphasized the difficulty of her choice to walk away from a job she described as a dream in multiple aspects.

Despite the appeal of the position that allowed her to engage in live radio and sports, Helen felt compelled to leave. She highlighted her appreciation for the BBC and the opportunity to work alongside talented individuals whom she considered some of the best in the industry.

Helen also noted the convenience of the job’s proximity to her home, a rarity given her demanding schedule. Reflecting on her departure, she expressed the emotional challenge of letting go of a position she had worked hard to attain for a significant period.

Additionally, she revealed that her unexpected public statement was prompted by a colleague’s mention on-air, which led her to address the situation. Helen expressed regret over leaving a team she considered a close-knit family and leaving behind a promising project that was challenging to walk away from.

Since leaving her previous role, Helen has become a regular presenter on BBC’s Morning Live, sharing hosting responsibilities during the early part of the week. Her diverse portfolio includes projects such as Countryfile, On the Farm, and Lost and Found in the Lakes.

Tonight, viewers can catch Helen back on screen in a new episode of Springtime on the Farm, where she celebrates the work of farmers across the country. Additionally, she showcases her competitive side on ITV’s Celebrity Lingo, airing at 7:30 pm on both ITV and ITVX, while Springtime on the Farm airs at 7 pm on Channel 5.
