Father’s Grim Covid Battle: Hallucinations & Near-Death Ordeal

Published on

A father who was urgently hospitalized due to Covid came close to death before enduring a grim fight with sepsis, experiencing vivid hallucinations, including one involving a creature under his bed.

Finbarre Snarey, aged 48, suffered severely from Covid despite having received two vaccine doses before falling critically ill in June 2021. Recalling his previous encounter with Covid, he described the sensation in his chest as akin to a rusty mattress and the breathing difficulties as horrific.

Contracting the virus again when his children brought it home from school, Finbarre’s condition worsened rapidly. When the ambulance service predicted an eight-hour wait, he decided to monitor his oxygen levels at home using an Oximeter, revealing alarming readings that prompted his wife to rush him to the hospital when his levels dropped below 90.

Upon arrival at the hospital, only Finbarre was allowed in due to Covid restrictions, leaving him to battle his illness alone. Despite being a non-smoking vegetarian with a healthy lifestyle, he found himself feverish, disoriented, and plagued by hallucinations as he was admitted to a ward.

Throughout his time in intensive care, Finbarre’s memories are fragmented, recalling instances of delirium and vivid hallucinations, including one of a creature under his bed. Despite the ordeal, he expressed gratitude for reaching the hospital in time, acknowledging that waiting for the ambulance might have had fatal consequences.

Following a challenging recovery period, which included difficulties in speaking and prolonged pain, Finbarre utilized technology to communicate without straining his voice. Engaging in an online recovery program called ENO Breathe, designed to aid long Covid patients, he found solace in breathing exercises and vocal techniques, eventually leading him to start a podcast and embrace new forms of communication.

Now on the path to recovery, Finbarre remains cautiously optimistic, focusing on living fully and exploring new experiences while being mindful of the ongoing risks. Despite the hardships endured, he remains determined to make the most of life, emphasizing the importance of resilience and a positive outlook.
