A 54-year-old man named Carl Ennis, known locally as “Scully,” tragically passed away after being assaulted at The Village Chippy in Stockbridge Village. The incident occurred on Friday, April 17, around 7:30 pm, where Carl sustained a severe head injury. Despite receiving help from the chippy staff, Carl left the premises with his food bag.

The ambulance service alerted the police the following day after Carl was hospitalized. Merseyside Police confirmed Carl’s death on Tuesday, leading to the assault investigation being upgraded to a murder inquiry. A 25-year-old man from Stockbridge Village, arrested for section 18 wounding with intent, is currently on conditional bail.

Carl, a father with ties to the Boode Croft and Woodfarm Hey area, was remembered for his kind and caring nature and love for wildlife. Tributes poured in on social media, with friends and locals expressing their shock and sadness over the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Cath Cummings expressed condolences to Carl’s family and friends and assured the community of a thorough investigation. Witnesses inside the chippy at the time were urged to come forward with any information to assist the murder inquiry.

The takeaway manager, Xiau Chen, recounted the chaotic scene, mentioning hearing a loud noise before discovering Carl with facial injuries. Despite the attacker fleeing the scene, Chen, his wife, and a customer provided aid to Carl, expressing confusion and shock over the incident. The motive behind the assault remains unclear, prompting calls for information from the public to shed light on the tragic event.
