A young man had his ideal job taken away by a persistent and cunning stalker who turned his life into a nightmare. Riley Taylor, 22, was harassed by Elliot McLelland, 24, who falsely claimed to be an MI5 agent as he infiltrated Riley’s life and threatened to ruin his career as a Ryanair steward.
McLelland relentlessly pursued Riley, shadowing him at work, waiting for him at the airport, and even booking flights he knew Riley would be working on. Despite being sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for a year, and receiving a five-year restraining order, McLelland walked free from Liverpool Magistrates court. Riley expressed disappointment with the sentence, stating he had to start over with a new career and life after losing his job due to the ordeal.
When Riley was 18, he secured a position working on Ryanair flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, a job he described as his dream. Employed by the Irish agency Cabin Crew International at the time, Riley shared his experience with the Liverpool Echo.
Recalling his encounters with McLelland, Riley mentioned initially observing him at the airport and later receiving messages on a dating app from him, expressing interest in friendship. McLelland fabricated elaborate stories, claiming to be on an undercover mission for MI5 investigating airport corruption linked to a bomb scare in Kensington. Despite suspicions, Riley found himself drawn into McLelland’s web of deceit.
As McLelland’s stalking intensified, with him tailing Riley to his home and even tracking his holiday travel, Riley eventually sought help from his employer. However, his pleas fell on deaf ears, leading to his termination on July 27. Riley recounted feeling unsupported and isolated during the ordeal, noting the impact it had on his personal and professional life.
McLelland, residing on Ionic Road in Old Swan, Merseyside, admitted to a single count of stalking without causing fear, alarm, or distress. Initially evading sentencing in November, he was eventually arrested in March and faced a suspended sentence after serving time on remand.
The prolonged ordeal, from the stalking to the legal proceedings, took a toll on Riley, who saw his dream job turn into a nightmare due to McLelland’s persistent and manipulative actions.
